Dallas Neuromas

A neuroma, also known as a pinched nerve or a nerve tumor, is a painful condition due to a benign growth of nerve tissue frequently found between the third and fourth toes. Neuromas can bring on pain, burning sensation, tingling, or numbness between toes and the ball of your foot.

A common neuroma symptom is pain in the ball of the foot while walking. Sometimes, the pain is described as feeling similar to having a stone in your shoe or “rolled up sock”. Causes of Neuromas

The exact cause of this condition is not clear, but a number of factors can contribute to formation of a neuroma:

• Biomechanical deformities, such as a high-arched foot or flat foot. These foot types cause instability around the joints of toes, which can lead to the development of a neuroma

Trauma that causes damage to the nerve, resulting in swelling of the nerve

• Improper footwear causing toes to be squeezed together, or high-heeled shoes that can increase pressure on the forefoot area

Neuroma Symptoms

You may have a neuroma if you’ve experienced any of the following:

• Pain in the forefoot or between toes
• Tingling or numbness in the ball of your foot
• Swelling between your toes
• Pain in the ball of your foot when weight is placed on it

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort that may be a neuroma, please contact a podiatrist as soon as possible. Left untreated, neuromas tend to get worse. For simple, undeveloped neuromas, a pair of thick-soled shoes with a wide toe box can be adequate enough to relieve symptoms, however more severe conditions may require additional treatment including possible injections or surgery to remove the tumor.
